In Case of an Accident

1. Safety First

Make sure that you and everyone involved are safe. If possible, move the vehicle to a safe location and turn on the hazard lights.

If anyone is injured, call 112 immediately and request police or ambulance assistance.

2. Towing of the Vehicle

If the car is not drivable or unsafe to operate after the accident, please call our emergency number:

+354 858 0499

Important:

  • This number is for emergencies only (non-drivable or unsafe vehicles).
  • For general inquiries, contract extensions, or other non-urgent matters, please contact us during normal office hours.
  • Towing costs are not covered by insurance. The renter is always responsible for the cost of transporting a damaged vehicle.

3. Accidents Involving Two or More Vehicles

If your vehicle is involved in a collision:

  • Fill out an accident statement.
  • Take clear photos of the scene and all damages.
  • Exchange the following information with the other driver:
    • Name and ID number
    • Phone number
    • Insurance details

You will find an accident report form in the glove box of your vehicle (or the other vehicle).

If no form is available, you can complete it online:
https://carcrash.is/

Please make sure to fill out every part of the accident statement.
A properly completed report is essential and can be a key factor in determining whether you may eventually have to pay for the damage.

Important:

  • Complete all sections of the report.
  • Both drivers must sign the form.
  • Each party keeps a copy of the signed report.

If there is a dispute, or if the accident involves injuries or significant damage, contact the police by calling 112.

If you are in the greater Reykjavík area, you may also contact arekstur.is at +354 578 9090.

4. Accidents Involving Only Your Vehicle

If no other vehicle is involved:

  • Fill out the accident report found in the glove box.

If no form is available, use the online form:
https://go-printer.scrive.com/public/index?hash=67158a5a-f217-44ac-9f43-55ec71c912a2

To complete the form, you will need your rental agreement number (found on your contract).
When asked for a Rental Agent Code, enter: 010400

5. Hitting a Parked Vehicle

If you damage a parked vehicle:

Minor damage (e.g. opening your door into another car):

  • Take photos of both vehicles.
  • Leave your contact details clearly visible on the other vehicle (e.g. under the windshield wiper).
  • Fill out an accident report (glove box or online form).
  • You may continue your journey and inform us at the end of your rental or via email at accident@hertz.is.

Major damage (e.g. collision causing significant damage):

  • Take photos of the scene and damages.
  • Call the police (112) and follow their instructions.

6. Documentation

Please document the accident by taking photos of:

  • All vehicles involved
  • License plates
  • Damage from multiple angles
  • Surrounding area (road conditions, signs, environment)

Keep a copy of the accident report and the other driver’s details.

7. Continuing After the Accident

You may continue driving only if:

  • The vehicle is safe to operate
  • There are no fluid leaks
  • Tires are undamaged
  • No warning lights are active
  • There is no significant body damage

If you are unsure, please visit the nearest Hertz location for assistance.

8. Returning the Vehicle

When returning the vehicle, please allow extra time.

The return process may take longer than usual, as our staff will assist you in completing any remaining documentation.
