⛽ Wrong Fuel Prevention Guide

It is very important to check the fuel type of your rental vehicle before refueling.
Putting the wrong fuel into the car can cause major disruption to your trip and may leave the vehicle unusable until repaired.

Important:
Using the wrong fuel may ruin an entire travel day depending on how far the nearest workshop is located.

⛽ Fuel Types in Iceland

Fuel Pump Handles

Most gas stations in Iceland only provide two fuel types for passenger vehicles:

  • Black Handles = Diesel
  • Green Handles = Gasoline / Petrol
Fuel pump colors in Iceland may be different from what you are used to in your home country.

🔍 How to Check Your Fuel Type

We provide the fuel type information in multiple locations including the keychain, rental contract, and inside the fuel lid.

Fuel Lid

🚗 Inside the Fuel Lid

The safest and most reliable place to verify the correct fuel type is inside the fuel lid.

Rental Contract

📄 Rental Contract

Your rental contract includes both the vehicle type and the required fuel type.

🔑 Keychain Label

Your vehicle keychain also displays the fuel type information.

Double check the keychain before refueling if you are unsure.

⚠️ What Happens if Wrong Fuel is Added?

The vehicle may continue driving briefly depending on how much correct fuel remained in the tank before the wrong fuel was added.

Do NOT restart the vehicle
if you suspect incorrect fuel has been added.
Restarting the engine can make the damage significantly worse.

🆘 What To Do if You Pump the Wrong Fuel

  1. Stop driving immediately if possible
  2. Do not restart the vehicle
  3. Ask gas station staff for assistance if available
  4. If the station is self-service or the car stops later, contact emergency assistance
Self-service stations are common in Iceland and assistance may not always be available onsite.
