Animals on the Road

Farm animals are common in Iceland, and in many areas sheep roam freely.

Why it’s dangerous

  • Animals can suddenly run onto the road
  • Sheep are unpredictable—especially with lambs nearby
  • Horses and other animals may approach your car

What to do

  • Slow down when you see animals near the road
  • Be prepared to stop at any time
  • Give animals plenty of space
  • Never try to scare or chase them away

If you see a lamb on one side and a sheep on the other → Expect the lamb to run across the road

Parking near animals

  • Do not park too close to animals
  • Horses may bite or chew parts of the car (salt attracts them)
  • This can cause serious damage

Responsibility

  • The driver is responsible for collisions with animals
  • All accidents must be reported

Key Rule

👉 If you see animals near the road, slow down and expect the unexpected.
