Speed Limits in Iceland

In perfect driving conditions, these are the general speed limits in Iceland:

  • Urban Areas (Towns/Cities): 50 km/h (30 mph)
  • Residential Areas: Often reduced to 30 km/h (18 mph)
  • Rural Gravel Roads: 80 km/h (50 mph)
  • Paved Rural Roads / Ring Road: 90 km/h (55 mph)

Always adjust your speed according to weather, visibility, gravel, wind, ice, and road conditions.
  • Speed cameras are common on the Ring Road
  • Police regularly patrol rural routes
  • Traffic fines in Iceland can be very expensive
