Returning your rental car correctly helps you avoid extra charges, delays, or disputes.
Locations & Opening Hours
Before returning your car, check the correct location and opening hours:
Hertz Iceland Locations
When returning a vehicle
- At Keflavík Airport (KEF), follow signs to the rental return area
- Park in the designated area and complete the return with staff
- If returning at another location than you picked up the car, this must be arranged in advance (fees may apply)
Fuel policy
- The car must be returned with a full tank of fuel.
- If not, refueling charges will be added unless you purchased a prepaid fuel option.
Vehicle inspection
- All vehicles are inspected upon return
- It is recommended you are present during inspection to avoid misunderstandings
Returning outside opening hours
- Park in the designated return area
- Lock the vehicle and return the keys in a drop off box, look for the signs
- You remain responsible for the vehicle until it is checked in
Timing
- Return the car on time to avoid extra charges
- Late returns may result in additional fees
- Early returns are allowed, but unused time is usually not refunded
If the car is damaged
- Report any damage immediately when returning the vehicle
- Provide clear information about what happened
- Staff will help you with accident documents.
