Common Damages
Avoid costly mistakes
Front Windshield Damage
Windshield damage is the most common type of damage in Iceland, accounting for approximately 35–40% of all damages to Hertz vehicles. This typically occurs when stones are thrown up from the road and strike the windshield, causing chips or cracks. How to avoid: You can reduce the risk by keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, especially when driving on gravel or unpaved roads.
Flat Tires
Flat tires are the most common reason for emergency calls to our hotline. Assistance can be difficult to arrange due to the large distances between workshops, particularly in rural areas. How to avoid: Be mindful of potholes and road surface damage. During winter, roads often deteriorate due to frost and rain. Always drive within the speed limit and adjust your driving to road conditions. 👉 Here is information on how to change a tire or use the foam repair kit
Wind Damage to Doors
This damage occurs when strong wind forces the doors open suddenly. Even if the damage appears minor, repairs can be very costly, as internal mechanical components inside the door may be affected. How to avoid: Park facing into the wind whenever possible, so the front of the car faces the wind. If this is not possible, always hold the door firmly when opening it.
Wrong Fuel
Always double-check the fuel type before refueling. The safest place to confirm the correct fuel is inside the fuel lid. ⚠️ Important notice: Fuel pump handle colors in Iceland may differ from what you are used to:
- Black – Diesel
- Green – Petrol
As with flat tires, resolving this issue can be time-consuming, especially if assistance is far away.
Transition from Paved Roads to Gravel Roads
While driving in Iceland, you are very likely to encounter gravel roads. It is important to recognize when the transition from paved to gravel roads occurs and adjust your driving accordingly. Key tips:
- Slow down before the transition
- Expect reduced traction
- Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns
- Loose stones can chip windshields and damage paint
