Wind damage

Doors can get big damages if not careful when opening them in windy conditions

Wind Damage in Iceland

Strong winds in Iceland can damage vehicles in seconds — especially doors.

Why it’s dangerous

  • Sudden gusts can rip car doors open — even the trunk door.
  • Doors can be bent or broken.
  • Even small-looking damage can become expensive because the mechanical parts inside the door may be damaged.
  • Wind can push your car sideways while driving.
  • Wind damage is very common in Iceland.

How to avoid damage

  • Park facing into the wind (front of the vehicle toward the wind).
  • Avoid parking in open, exposed areas when possible.
  • Use buildings, hills, or terrain for shelter.

When opening doors

  • Always hold the door firmly with both hands.
  • Open doors slowly and carefully.
  • Be extra cautious on the windy side of the vehicle.

Extra tips

  • Check wind conditions on vedur.is before driving.
  • If winds become very strong, stay inside the vehicle.
Remember: If you can feel the wind pushing the vehicle, it is strong enough to damage the doors.
