What Are Sand / Ash Storms?
Sand and ash storms occur in Iceland when
strong winds lift sand, volcanic ash, or small stones
from the ground.
They are most common in dry areas, but can also occur in
wet or rocky regions if winds are very strong.
These storms are especially common in the
southern parts of Iceland.
What Type of Damage Can Occur?
- Small dot-like damage to the paintwork

Removal of the protective coating, which can lead to
rust if not repaired -
Severe damage to windows and windshields, making them
cloudy and difficult to see through
Even short exposure can cause costly damage.
How to Avoid Sand Damage
- Always check the weather forecast before driving

If You Are Caught in a Sandstorm
- Do not drive into the wind
- Stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so
- Park in shelter from the wind if possible
- If no shelter is available, park the car facing the wind

until conditions improve
