F-Road Safety Guide

🏔️ F-Roads (Highland Roads)

F-roads are Iceland’s mountain roads leading into the Highlands.
These are not normal roads and require extra preparation,
proper vehicles, and careful driving.

⚠️ IMPORTANT
F-roads can include river crossings, rough terrain, no signal coverage,
and rapidly changing weather conditions.

🛣️ What Are F-Roads?

Marked with an “F” (example: F208, F35)
Rough roads made of gravel, rocks, and sand
May include unbridged river crossings
Often located in remote areas with no services

🚙 Key Rules

✅ 4×4 Required

A proper 4×4 vehicle is required by law on F-roads.

❌ No 2WD Vehicles

2WD vehicles are not allowed and insurance may become invalid.

☀️ Summer Only

Most F-roads are only open during summer,
typically from June to September.

🚫 Closed Roads

Driving on closed F-roads is illegal and dangerous.

Remote locations with limited help nearby
Road conditions can change within hours

Rivers are unbridged and water levels can change quickly during the day.

Stop and assess the river first
Choose the shallowest path
Drive slowly and steadily
Never change gears mid-crossing

🚫 Who Should NOT Drive F-Roads

First-time or inexperienced drivers

Travelers without proper 4×4 vehicles

Consider joining a guided super jeep tour instead.
